Meeting with a Chiropractor for the First Time

Hello Everyone!

This week I have begun to attend, what will be, a series of therapies to readjust my neck. June 25th I was in a terrible car accident, which left me with 4 herniated disks on my neck alone, and lots of discomfort mixed with some pain. It has been quite an experience and not in the best of ways. I speak more openly about this topic in my newsletter, in case you haven’t signed up for it!

Dr. Mark Currington was recommended by a friend, Janet @the_prudentwoman . I had never been to a chiropractor before ever! I think we can all agree that going to a chiropractor can feel a bit scary.

The Consultation

My first encounter with Dr. Currington was a friendly one! He is so nice, very informative, and takes the time to help you understand exactly what he does and the benefits of it. This is the time where all questions can be asked and not one question gets left unanswered. My main question was learning about the benefits.

As per Dr. Currington, the brain stem allows for everything in our body to function properly. The brain stem houses all of our nerves which stems down our spine and out to the rest of our body. If our brain stem is not aligned correctly with our spine, that’s when we start getting sick of things that can be prevented or function better with a corrected spine. This all made sense once Dr. Currington showed me a normal spine versus a curved spine. That moment I was convinced I need to get mine checked. Which he did.

X-Rays

The next step I took to begin my sessions with Dr. Currington was take my xrays. The process went by very quick! Then I booked my first official session with Currington, where together he reviewed my xrays. He let me know what needed to be corrected, and showed me how a normal neck and spine should look like. I love how Dr. Currington provides a lot of education.

First Session

My first week conducted of visiting Dr. Currington twice. The first day I completed one therapy exercise, followed by a demo of homework that I have to do everyday at home. The plan is to loosen up my neck so that it can be corrected. The next session (day 2) I focused on 2 therapy exercises that I showed on my Instastories, and he also popped my neck. Guys it felt so good! The rest of day I felt great! Even though this was just the first week, I feel that at this rate progress MUST be made!

Advice/Recommendations

  • Research Chiros in your area and look at reviews

It’s so important to do your research! Not all Chiropractors are the same, in the sense that some have had years of experience to others who have a different form of practice. Do your research and make a consultation appointment with at least 2 (3 if you really find a third you like).

  • Set up consultation appts

They should offer this in their office. This gives you a chance to get a feel of the office/environment , and of course the connection you make (or don’t make) with the Dr.

  • Ask a lot of questions

SO IMPORTANT! If this is your first time ever visiting a Chiro, ask questions. If they care (which they should) they will answer your questions to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

  • Ask for a demo

To really see the work they do, ask if they can perform one type of exercise. This will allow you to see them in action and really determine if you want to work with them.

  • Relax and don’t be scared

The only way you will relax is if you feel comfortable with the doctor you’ve connected with. At least that’s what happened in my case. I was nervous and scared going in, then I relaxed after spending quite a few minutes asking questions and learning about the benefits. By the time a demo was conducted, I felt comfortable. Dr. Currington also would let me know what he was about to so I was “prewarned” so to speak.

I will be sharing more of my experience as I go along in my Coffee Chats newsletter! I’m praying that I am able to get my neck and spine corrected to avoid anything worse in the future.

Have you been to a chiropractor? What was your experience like?
